Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has given his support to Organ Donation Week 2023, which takes place from 18 to 24 September.
The aim of the week is to raise awareness of organ donation, encourage more people to register to become an organ donor on the NHS Organ Donor Register, and to encourage those on the register to inform their loved ones of their decision.
The NHS Blood and Transplant service is hoping to see buildings across the UK lit up in pink to mark the week and to inspire people to confirm their decision regarding organ donation.
There are on average 500 people in Scotland awaiting an organ transplant at any one time. Organ donation has the potential to dramatically improve and save lives, with each donor having the potential to save up to nine lives.
Mr Halcro Johnston is encouraging everyone to consider their own position with regard to organ donation and to discuss and share their decision with family and friends.
Mr Halcro Johnston said: "Organ Donation Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness and to encourage more people to register as organ donors.
“The shortage of organs available for transplant in Scotland leaves far too many people waiting, but every name on the organ donor register represents hope for those who are and for their families.
“The process of registering as an organ donor is simple, but the impact is profound. It has made a real difference to the lives of people right across the Highlands and Islands.
“I hope this year’s Organ Donation Week is a great success, and that more people will consider making what is often a life-saving decision and register as a donor”.
