Highlands and Islands MSP and Deputy Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands, Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
"It is worrying to see yet another local branch lost, with Virgin Money customers now forced to either switch banks or travel long distances to access their financial needs.
"This decision will undoubtedly impact on the local community and local businesses, reducing options for essential banking services.
"The closure of the Fort William branch not only highlights the challenges faced by many rural areas in maintaining vital services, but also raises questions about the commitment of banks to support local economies.
"Access to local banking facilities shouldn't be something denied to rural communities, regardless of geographical location.
"The closure of this branch sends a worrying message about the financial sector's understanding of the unique needs and dynamics of communities in rural communities such as the Highlands and Islands.
"Banks should be actively working towards finding innovative solutions, such as mobile or shared banking services, to ensure that no area is left behind."
