Speaking following the latest suspension of the Corran Ferry, Highlands and Islands MSP, and Deputy Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands, Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
"This can’t go on like this. On my visit to the area a couple of weeks ago, I saw for myself the impact on local communities and heard the anger that constituents feel day in, day out, because of the disruption to their lives and livelihoods,
“Despite the best efforts of crews and staff, the repeated issues with the Corran ferry are more than just an inconvenience for those who rely on the crossing. It has shaken the trust of local communities in the ability - and even the willingness - of either the Highland Council or the Scottish Government to find a sustainable solution.
“The Highland Council appears to have no clear timetable on delivering a solution, and successive SNP ministers appear to have washed their hands of the problem.
“The last two Scottish transport ministers both promised me they would visit and meet with local communities, but neither did. The new Transport Minister, Fiona Hyslop, must not only make the same commitment but actually deliver on it.
"But what is needed urgently is a meeting between Highland Council and the Scottish Government on delivering a solution.
“And given the impact on local businesses, the Scottish Government and Highland Council should be drawing up a plan to compensate businesses and communities for the loss of trade at what is their busiest time of year.
“Local residents and businesses deserve better than the unreliable service and ongoing uncertainty they’re getting now.
"They need to see action, not just more talk from Edinburgh and from Inverness".
