> On Friday, Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston was on his way to Dunvegan Primary School to see for himself the condition of some of the school's facilities, an issue which Mr Halcro Johnston has raised in Parliament, when the visit was cancelled at the last minute.
> Mr Halcro Johnston has now written to Highland Council for answers as to why the visit was cancelled and reassurances that a future visit will be allowed.
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has expressed his deep disappointment at the sudden cancellation by The Highland Council of his planned visit to Dunvegan Primary School last Friday (15th March). Mr Halcro Johnston was on his way to the school when the visit was cancelled.
In addition to his comments (released) on Friday, Mr Halcro Johnston said:
"I have written to the Chief Executive of The Highland Council seeking an urgent explanation as to why my visit was cancelled and why they chose to cancel it at the very last minute.
"It is well known that there are serious concerns from parents and staff over the condition of some of the facilities at Dunvegan, and I am disappointed that - having raised the issue with the Education Secretary in the Scottish Parliament - I was denied the chance to see for myself the state of the facilities.
“As a member of the Scottish Parliament, I simply cannot understand why Highland Council felt it necessary to block what was always intended to be just a quick fact-finding visit, and I am seeking assurances that any future visit to either Dunvegan – or any other school in the Highland – will be allowed to go ahead”.
