> Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has written to the Office of Rail and Road urging continued operation of the Jacobite Steam Train Service.
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has written to the Chief Executive of the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to raise concerns about the suspension of the Jacobite Steam Train service operated by West Coast Railways.
In his letter, the Scottish Conservative MSP highlighted the importance of the service to the local economy, as well as the impact any continuing suspension could have on jobs and livelihoods.
Mr Halcro Johnston called on ORR Chief Executive John Larkinson to work with Jacobite operator West Coast Railways to find a solution that would allow the service to continue.
Mr Halcro Johnston said:
"The Jacobite Steam Train is an iconic service, one which attracts thousands of visitors into the area and supports local jobs and businesses.
“A solution needs to be found that will ensure its continued operation while maintaining safety standards.
“Whilst I recognise the obligations on the ORR, I would hope they would grant the temporary exemption necessary for the service to continue, and then work with West Coast Railways to find a workable long-term solution that addresses any safety concerns the ORR has.
“Any ongoing suspension only risks the future of the service, jeopardising the economic viability of those local livelihoods and businesses that rely on it.
“Time is of the essence, and I hope action will be taken as soon as possible to ensure this locally important – and nationally iconic – service is able to resume operations as soon as possible”.
