Skye Rugby’s first game in the Caledonia North Region League Division 2 (Men’s) has attracted Holyrood recognition in the form of an official Scottish Parliament motion.
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston submitted the motion this week highlighting Skye’s first ever league match this Saturday (9th September) against Highland Rugby 3rd XV at Plockton High School. The motion praises the efforts of players, supporters and volunteers, and wishes the club success for the future.
Mr Halcro Johnston, whose great-great uncle Henry Halcro Johnston was a Scottish international in the late 19th century, and who has himself played for the Scottish Parliament’s own rugby team against the Irish, French and UK parliaments, said he looked forward to watching the club grow.
Mr Halcro Johnston said: "It is so exciting to see Skye Rugby hit this major milestone.
“Having played rugby – albeit with varying degrees of success – for almost all of my life, I know just how important it can be in bringing people together, improving people’s health, and providing a focal point for communities.
“And I know just how much hard work goes into the administration side of a club, particularly a new one. So playing their first-ever league match is huge and it couldn't have happened without the dedication of the players, supporters, and volunteers. Well done to them all.
"I extend my very best wishes to Skye Rugby - not only for this game, but also for their continued efforts to expand the rugby community on the island. I’m looking forward to watching the club grow and succeed in the coming years."
Jamie Halcro Johnston has submitted the motion below to the Scottish Parliament:
That the Parliament notes that Skye Rugby will play its first ever league match on 9 September 2023 as it plays Highland Rugby 3rd XV at Plockton High School in the Caledonia North Region League Division 2 (Men’s); congratulates all the players, supporters and volunteers at Skye Rugby who have worked so hard to help get the club to this enormous milestone event, and wishes Skye Rugby and all its teams every success for the future as they continue to grow rugby on the island.
