An MSP is backing advice from The Dogs Trust which helps dog-owners better support their pets during the coming fireworks season.
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston welcomed the simple set of measures the animal welfare charity has put forward, recognising that this is a stressful time of year for many pets.
Mr Halcro Johnston said: “It’s that time of year again when, as well as the well-organised official events, some communities are forced to endure an almost relentless barrage of fireworks, often last into the night.
“Dog owners will know just how alarming and stressful their pets can find fireworks, and so this advice from The Dogs Trust is very welcome indeed.
“The advice includes simple measures such as ensuring dogs have a safe and quiet place to go to at home if they become alarmed, as well as making sure they are taken for a walk during the day, before fireworks are set off.
“Man’s best friend deserves our care and attention all year round, but never more so than at this time of year.”
Among the other measures suggested by the Dogs Trust are:
- Make sure your house is secure
- Give your dog comfort if it seeks reassurance
- Build a cosy den for your dog
- Let your dog hide away or play as it pleases
- Never force a dog outside
