[Scottish Parliament, 17.06.2024] In response to the Conservatives’ pledge to increase the farming budget across the UK by £1bn over the next Parliament, Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston said:
“I welcome this commitment, one that highlights the importance of our farming sector.
“It is vital that any new agriculture funding from the next UK Government is given to Scottish farmers and not, as has been the case recently, syphoned off by Scottish ministers in Edinburgh with no details on when that money, ring-fenced for agriculture, will be returned.
“Our farmers and crofters are the backbone of our rural and island communities, and the money must be spent supporting them and not left sitting in Scottish Government coffers in Edinburgh or diverted to plug gaps in their budgets”.
